Lortab Withdrawal

If a regular user of Lortab stops taking the drug, they will experience Lortab withdrawal symptoms within six to twelve hours. Lortab withdrawal symptoms are usually not life-threatening. The intensity of withdrawal symptoms depends on the degree of the individual's addiction to the drug. For example, Lortab withdrawal symptoms may grow stronger for twenty-four to seventy-two hours and then gradually decline over a period of seven to fourteen days.

Lortab combines a narcotic analgesic (painkiller) and cough reliever with a non-narcotic analgesic for the relief of moderate to moderately severe pain. Many people develop an addiction to Lortab because it produces feelings of well-being. Once an individual has developed an addiction to Lortab they will often get multiple prescriptions from different doctors to support their addiction.

The Schedule III status of hydrocodone-containing products such as Lortab has made them available to widespread diversion by "bogus call-in prescriptions" and thefts. Three dosage forms are typically found (5, 7.5, and 10 mg) and their behavioral effects can last up to 5 hours. Individual who have a Lortab abuse problem often take the drug orally. As with most opiates, the adverse effects of Lortab abuse are dependence and tolerance development. Its co-formulation with acetaminophen has also increased the likelihood of acetaminophen-induced hepatic necrosis with high dose acute dosing, but slow escalation of dose over time seems to protect the liver during high dose chronic exposures seen with this drug.

Lortab works by activating the brain's reward systems. The promise of reward is very intense, causing the individual to crave more Lortab and to focus his or her activities around taking the drug. The ability of Lortab to strongly activate brain reward mechanisms and its ability to chemically alter the normal functioning of these systems is what produces an addiction to Lortab. Lortab also reduce a person's level of consciousness, harming the ability to think or be fully aware of present surroundings.

Lortab withdrawal symptoms include but are not limited to:

  • diarrhea
  • dilated pupils
  • fevers
  • intense cravings for the drug
  • irritability
  • muscle aches
  • nausea or vomiting
  • runny nose or eyes
  • sweating
  • yawning
